Leiden Summer School in Languages and Linguistics
28 July - 08 August 2008
Leiden University, Faculty of Arts
Please note: The registration form did not work last week! If you tried to register and received no reaction, please contact Saskia Tiethoff!Welcome to the homepage of the Leiden Summer School in Languages and Linguistics. This Summer School will be held from 28 July - 08 August 2008 at the Faculty of Arts of Leiden University. The Summer School offers a number of courses on a wide range of subjects in the field of languages and linguistics by international specialists. This year the Summer School will consist of six programmes, each with its own courses: the Indo-European Programme, the Iranian Programme, the Indological Programme, the Semitic Programme, the Russian Programme and the Dutch Programme. Of course, it is possible for you to put together your own programme by combining courses that interest you from among the different programmes.
Time Schedule
All courses will be taught on a daily basis (10 days) for 90 minutes per day. Since we will be working with four time-slots per day, each student can in principle follow four courses within the Summer School period. Nevertheless, since many courses require preparation, students have the option to take only three courses, using one timeslot as preparation time.
The daily schedule will be as follows:
9.30 – 11.00 Course 1
11.30 – 13.00 Course 2
13.00 – 14.00 Lunch
14.00 – 15.30 Course 3
16.00 – 17.30 Course 4
17.30 – 19.00 Dinner
19.00 – 21.00 Evening program
Because these time-slots apply to all courses within the individual programmes of the Summer School, and because the courses are all taught at the same location, it is possible to create your own programme by choosing a combination of courses from among the different Summer School Programmes. For the time-table see the Combined Programme.
Teaching language
All courses are taught in English (except for the courses of the Russian Programme, which are given in Russian), which means that good knowledge of the English language is a basic requirement.
ECTS
Active participation in a course stands for 2 ECTS. At the end of the Summer School, every participant will receive a certificate, which will indicate the courses followed and the amount of awarded ECTS credits. If a participant needs more ECTS credits for the followed course, he may ask his supervisor at his home university to take a written examination. The Leiden Summer School will then provide the University with an examination and a key. Although the participant's own University is responsible for accrediting ECTS credits, we recommend a total amount of 5 ECTS credits per Summer School course (2 for active participation + 3 for examination).
Evening program
The evening program will consist of a series of lectures given by the teachers of the Summer School and by invited scholars. These lectures are intended to broaden the horizons of the students, treating subjects which are not usually part of university curricula. The program is at this point not known yet, but will be announced when available.
Tuition fee
We charge students a fee of € 300,- for the whole Summer School period. Those who are not regular university students will be charged € 400,- (please note that in the case of over-enrollment for courses with a limited number of participants, university students will take precedence over non-students).
Students who wish to follow only one or two courses, receive 50% discount on the tuition fee.
Accommodation
Participants can make use of two types of dormitories. The first type consists of shared rooms that are situated in a dormitory at the Smaragdlaan in Leiden, which is about 10 minutes by bus or 30 minutes by foot from the Central Station and the University buildings. This dormitory consists of two-person rooms (which means that you will have to share a room with one fellow participant) and will cost € 300,- euro per person for the whole Summer School period. Every room is furnished and has its own kitchen (including kitchenware), toilet and shower.
The second type consists of single rooms that are located in several dormitories throughout the city center, usually only 5 to 15 minutes by foot from the University buildings. These one-person rooms will cost € 400,- euro per person for the whole Summer School period.
Note that in both dormitories the number of rooms is limited, and registrations will be handled on a "first come, first-served" basis.
The rooms are available from Saturday 26 July until Saturday 09 August. The prices mentioned include a set of sheets and the cleaning of the room after you have checked out.
Since we have to reserve each room separately, we have to be very strict regarding deadlines. Moreover, we need you to pay in advance. Thus, in order to guarantee a place in the dormitories, you must have registered and paid the rent for the room before 31 May 2008. After this date we will not be able to guarantee a place in the dormitories for you.
Update: the deadline to reserve a room in the dormitories has passed. However, a limited number of shared rooms might still be available. If you’d like to participate in the Summer School and you don’t have accommodation in or near Leiden, please consult .
